Job Summary:

Under the direct supervision and control of a licensed pharmacist, procures, orders, receives, stocks and returns pharmaceutical merchandise following established procedures. Is responsible for the organization and maintenance of proper inventory levels in assigned location(s) or department(s).

Essential Responsibilities:



  • Upholds Kaiser Permanentes Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws. Based on inventory monitoring systems, determines the appropriate levels and needed inventory. Orders merchandise from selected sources (Kaiser Pharmacy warehouse and other approved vendors and manufacturers) utilizing appropriate bid information. Receives deliveries of incoming pharmacy merchandise for the location or department. Inspects shipping container(s) for obvious signs of damage or mis-handling. Verifies quantity of container(s) received, and signs and dates delivery receipt. NOTE: Also may refused delivery if mis-shipped or duplicate order. Maintains receiving logs as required by security standards. Compares items, unit-prices, and quantities received against the invoice and/or purchase order. Resolves discrepancies as per established procedures. Places merchandise in display shelves, distribution and storage areas at the location and/or department indicating cost per unit of issue if appropriate. Rotates stock in order of expiration date. Complies with special handling and storage requirements for pharmaceuticals including chemotherapeutic agents, controlled substances, refrigerated and frozen items. Performs routine inspection of physical inventory to ascertain adequate stock levels, expiration dates, obsolescence and proper storage at the location and/or department. Collects, itemizes, unit-prices, packages and ships expired and/or obsolete pharmaceuticals to the Central Pharmacy returns Room or primary wholesaler. Processes Local Pharmacy Requisitions on a weekly basis and forward to location manager. Obtains authorizing signature on invoices and requisitions and sends required documentation to Accounts Payable. Maintains inventory documents on file in an organized and secured manner as required by laws, regulations, polices and procedures.

  • Maintains confidentiality on inventory usage and cost information. Assists pharmacy manager in maintenance of Pharmacy Information Management System (PIMS) perpetual inventory as required by Regional Pharmacy procedure. Assists pharmacy manager in collecting data and preparing reports. Make recommendations to management regarding systems or operational improvements to enhance services provided by the department. Maintains work area and equipment in an organized and clean condition; maintains a safe, secure and efficient work environment. Answers and makes telephone calls consistent with assigned duties in accordance with telephone access standards. Exemplifies pharmacys mission and the organizations vision by contributing to the health and satisfaction of members by providing appropriate medications, information, and professional services in a helpful, caring, courteous, and efficient manner. Performs other duties as required. Variation: (e.g. Stocking-to-standards) Performs routine inspection of pharmaceutical stock in designated Hospital and Medical Office departments (e.g. Medical/Surgical Walk-in, Anesthesiology, emergency Room). Documents non-adherence to procedures for drug storage and refers to appropriate manager. Replenishes or removes used or expired medications from inventory to maintain required stock levels. Records quantity and price for fussier charges/credits to the Department. Recharges or bills departments on a monthly basis. Assume other activities and responsibilities from time to time as directed.


Basic Qualifications: Experience

Ability to read, understand, and transcribe pharmaceutical information. Excellent written and verbal English-speaking communication skills. Working knowledge of current drug forms, dosage strengths, generic and trade name equivalents, drug storage requirements and purchasing sources. Demonstrates mathematical skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide). Ability to lift or transport containers/packages of up to 50lbs weight. Ability to learn and operate pharmacy and personal computer systems. Ability to learn and operate electronic ordering devices.
